Farmer Training & Practical Demonstrations
Hands-on group and individual workshops teaching farmers the science and daily routines of Azolla farming.
Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern cultivated in simple basins and lined ponds. Rich in 25–30% crude protein, it replaces 20% to 35% of expensive commercial feeds. Azofarm Ug supplies pure starter cultures, installs on-farm growing units, and trains livestock farmers across Uganda to cut feed bills by over 30% while practicing zero-grazing that protects critical forests and wetlands.

Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern that can be cultivated in small spaces using simple water-based systems, including cups, basins, and lined ponds. It establishes rapidly and provides a readily available, high-protein source of livestock feed throughout the entire year.
At Azofarm Ug, we grow Azolla and train farmers to cultivate and use Azolla as a practical livestock-feeding skill. Farmers receive hands-on training, demonstrations, and practical guidance on cultivation, harvesting, and feed rationing.
Azolla is highly palatable and can be incorporated into the diets of many domestic animals—including poultry, pigs, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, and fish. It supplies vital proteins, vitamins, and minerals, helping farmers cut commercial feed bills by over 30% when appropriately integrated into daily feeding regimens.
Thrives in cups, basins, and silpaulin-lined earthen ponds of 2m×3m in backyards.
Continuous daily harvesting regardless of dry-season pasture shortages.

Commercial concentrates and feed ingredients have become prohibitively expensive across Uganda. Test our calculator to see how much Azolla your herd or flock needs, and the financial savings you will gain.
Estimate your daily harvest requirements, optimal pond dimensions, and monthly feed expense savings in Ugandan Shillings (UGX).
Provides deep golden egg yolks, boosts shell hardness, and saves 30%+ on commercial layer mash.
From initial culture inoculation to complete dietary integration, we walk hand-in-hand with farmers across Uganda.

Ultimately, Azolla farming contributes to both livelihood resilience and biodiversity conservation. When farmers maintain productive livestock without forest grazing, habitats and wildlife thrive.
By providing an affordable, locally produced feed source, Azolla supports zero-grazing and improved herd management. This eliminates the need to drive livestock into national parks (like Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth) or protected forest reserves (such as Budongo) in search of pasture during dry periods.
Keeping livestock in managed zero-grazing pens reduces direct contact between domestic stock and wild fauna. This prevents cross-species transmission of parasites, respiratory pathogens, and zoonoses between goats, cattle, and endangered primates such as mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.
Animal manure enriches the Azolla pond substrate, the nitrogen-fixing fern provides rich protein feed for the animals, and nutrient-dense pond effluent is applied to household vegetable gardens as an organic biofertilizer, eliminating synthetic chemical inputs.
Azolla is readily eaten by poultry, pigs, dairy cattle, goats, rabbits, and fish. Here is how each species benefits.
10% – 20% of daily dry matter intake
15% – 25% substitution of commercial concentrates
Replaces 15% – 20% of commercial dairy meal/concentrate
15% – 25% of daily forage ration
20% – 30% of supplementary feed
20% – 30% of daily green forage
