Questions About Azolla Farming
Everything you need to know about growing Azolla, animal feeding ratios, starter culture orders, and farm economics in Uganda.
What is Azolla and how does it reduce livestock feed costs in Uganda?
Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern that establishes rapidly in shallow water systems such as cups, basins, and lined ponds. Rich in 25–30% crude protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids, it can replace 20% to 35% of expensive commercial concentrates and bran in livestock diets, reducing feed expenses by over 30% for poultry, pigs, dairy cows, and goats.
What livestock species can be fed Azolla?
Azolla is highly palatable and safely consumed by poultry (layers, broilers, and indigenous kienyeji chickens), ducks, pigs, dairy cattle, beef steers, goats, sheep, rabbits, and herbivorous fish (such as Nile Tilapia and African Catfish).
How much space and water do I need to cultivate Azolla?
Very little space is required. Backyard homesteads can cultivate Azolla in ordinary laundry basins or plastic crates (15–20 cm deep). For commercial flocks or herds, an earthen pit lined with UV-treated silpaulin sheet measuring 2m x 3m (6 square meters) and 25–30 cm deep requires about 400–600 liters of water and yields 1.0 to 2.0 kg of fresh green protein daily.
How fast does Azolla grow and when can I start harvesting?
Under typical Ugandan tropical conditions (moderate shade and warm temperatures), Azolla doubles its biomass every 3 to 7 days. After initial pond inoculation with pure starter culture, the pond will form a lush, dense green mat within 7 to 10 days. From that point onwards, you can harvest up to half the biomass every single day indefinitely.
How does Azolla farming protect Uganda’s forests, wetlands, and wildlife?
By providing an abundant, year-round on-farm feed source, Azolla enables complete zero-grazing. Farmers no longer need to herd goats and cattle into national parks (such as Bwindi Impenetrable or Queen Elizabeth) or protected forest corridors (like Budongo) in search of dry-season fodder, eliminating habitat trampling, sapling destruction, and illegal forest encroachment.
How does zero-grazing with Azolla prevent wildlife disease transmission?
Confining livestock to managed farm pens prevents direct and indirect contact between domestic animals and wild fauna (including endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees). This barrier stops cross-species transmission of gastrointestinal parasites, respiratory pathogens, and zoonoses, advancing the One Health framework.
How do I order pure Azolla starter culture and schedule farmer training?
Azofarm Ug provides certified, pest-free mother cultures dispatched nationwide across Uganda via courier and regional buses. We also offer on-farm pond construction, demonstration setup, and group training workshops. You can order directly by chatting with our agronomist on WhatsApp at +256 752 518 402 or emailing info@azofarmug.com.
Can pond water effluent and excess Azolla be used as crop fertilizer?
Yes. Azolla is one of the world’s most potent green biofertilizers. Pond wastewater, rich in fixed organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals, makes an exceptional organic liquid fertilizer for bananas, vegetables, and coffee. Surplus or composted Azolla restores degraded tropical topsoil rapidly.
