Azolla Livestock Feed & Rationing Guide

Azolla is highly palatable and rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Follow these tested inclusion rates and feeding protocols to cut animal feed expenses by over 30% safely.

Preparation Essentials

The 3 Golden Rules of Feeding Azolla

Correct preparation ensures animals consume Azolla voraciously without gut disturbance.

1

Wash Thoroughly with Clean Water

Always rinse freshly harvested Azolla in a clean plastic bucket or mesh strainer. This removes pond mud, traces of organic manure slurry, and any earthy odor, making the fern smell crisp and appetizing to animals.

2

Gradual 7-to-10 Day Introduction

Animals must adapt to new feed textures. Start on Day 1 by mixing 10% Azolla with 90% regular feed. Increase by 10% every two days until reaching the target inclusion level. Within a week, livestock will anticipate Azolla eagerly.

3

Fresh, Wilted, or Solar-Dried

Feed poultry and cattle freshly washed wet biomass; wilt slightly for rabbits and goats to reduce excess moisture; or solar-dry on clean tarpaulins for 2 to 3 days to mill into high-protein dry leaf meal for storage.

Recommended Diets by Animal Category

Scientific rationing benchmarks developed by Dr. Steven Kizza and field trials across Ugandan livestock farms.

Avian

Poultry (Broilers, Layers & Kienyeji Chickens)

Feed Cost Cut30% – 35%
Recommended Daily Ration
20g – 50g fresh Azolla per adult bird per day
Inclusion Rate
10% – 20% of daily dry matter intake
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Deep yellow/orange egg yolk color from natural beta-carotene
  • Cuts commercial feed bill by 25% – 35%
  • Enhanced feather quality, immune vigor, and lower mortality
  • Promotes active foraging behavior and reduces flock pecking
Preparation & Serving Method:

Washed fresh biomass fed in separate troughs or mixed directly into wet mash/maize bran.

Porcine

Pigs & Swine (Growers, Finishers, Sows)

Feed Cost Cut25% – 35%
Recommended Daily Ration
1.5 kg – 3.0 kg fresh Azolla per pig per day (depending on weight)
Inclusion Rate
15% – 25% substitution of commercial concentrates
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Reduces costly pig grower pellets and concentrate consumption
  • Produces lean, high-quality carcass with reduced backfat
  • Improves sow lactation and litter weaning weights
  • Excellent digestibility and rich lysine/methionine amino acid balance
Preparation & Serving Method:

Fed fresh mixed with swill, maize bran, or milled dry into formulated pig feed.

Bovine

Dairy Cattle & Beef Steers

Feed Cost Cut20% – 30%
Recommended Daily Ration
1.5 kg – 2.5 kg fresh Azolla per lactating cow daily
Inclusion Rate
Replaces 15% – 20% of commercial dairy meal/concentrate
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Increases daily milk yield by 10% – 15% (1 to 2 litres extra per cow)
  • Higher butterfat and total milk solids content
  • Improves cow body condition score during dry season pasture deficits
  • Supports complete zero-grazing stall feeding without forest fodder collection
Preparation & Serving Method:

Washed fresh Azolla mixed with dairy meal, chopped Napier grass, or silage.

Caprine / Ovine

Goats & Sheep (Small Ruminants)

Feed Cost Cut30% – 40%
Recommended Daily Ration
500g – 1.0 kg fresh Azolla per adult goat or sheep daily
Inclusion Rate
15% – 25% of daily forage ration
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Eliminates the need to herd goats into protected forests and wetlands for pasture
  • Rapid kid growth rates and improved twinning rates in breeding does
  • Highly palatable; goats consume leaves and roots voraciously
  • Protects herds from tick-borne infections and wild predator attacks in bush grazing
Preparation & Serving Method:

Air-wilted for 30 minutes after washing, served in clean elevated troughs.

Piscine

Aquaculture (Nile Tilapia & African Catfish)

Feed Cost Cut30% – 45%
Recommended Daily Ration
Fed fresh floating on pond surface twice daily
Inclusion Rate
20% – 30% of supplementary feed
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Tilapia actively browse on fresh floating Azolla fronds
  • Drastically slashes expenditure on expensive commercial floating pellets
  • Oxygenates water and creates healthy aquatic bio-filtration
  • High conversion efficiency for omnivorous fish
Preparation & Serving Method:

Fed directly fresh onto water surface or dried and ground into pelleted fish rations.

Lagomorph

Rabbits (Meat & Breeding Stock)

Feed Cost Cut35% – 45%
Recommended Daily Ration
100g – 200g wilted Azolla per adult rabbit
Inclusion Rate
20% – 30% of daily green forage
Observed Production Benefits:
  • Accelerates kit growth to slaughter weight 2 to 3 weeks earlier
  • Cuts rabbit pellet reliance
  • Low fiber, highly digestible tender biomass
  • Boosts doe reproductive vitality and milk production
Preparation & Serving Method:

Washed and wilted in shade to eliminate surface moisture before feeding.
